Today marks the day I finally complete the new redesign of my personal portfolio website. After five or so redesigns and ten concepts, I can safely say this site is fully functional and easier to navigate than the prior versions. All I need to do now is get the text approved and hopefully I can graduate. It’s definitely been a long journey getting to this point, but at least I got it done. Pictures of the other designs and concepts below.

Something I hear a lot in the design community, or at least around school, is that “real” designers use Macs. Well, I don’t agree with this one bit, for I believe if someone considers him or herself a “real” designer than the operating system does not matter, neither the program for that matter. Plus, most programs work on both operating systems, so it’s all a matter of preference. I will agree that more is offered to designers out of the box, if they chose a Mac, but they still get third party programs to do their designs. There are things I like from both operating systems, and Ubuntu for that matter, but for one to think it’s odd for a designer to use anything other than a Mac is simply ridiculous.

Some things I like about Leopard are native support for files such as PDF, Quicktime Files, and PSDs; Helvetica, Futura, and other standard fonts not found in Windows out of the box; and a Color Calibrator built in (now in Windows 7). Although, one main thing I dislike is dual monitor support; it’s funky, mainly with spaces and the finder bar.

When it comes to video production, however, I think a Mac is essential if you’re using industry standard programs. I’ve had Pro Tools for a while and can’t use it on 64bit Window, so I had to choose a Mac at this point. I more than likely wouldn’t have switched if Digidesign decided to support Windows 64bit, but have no complaints since the program works. If I went around caring so much about what my OS comes with than I wouldn’t be using a third party program at all, the only thing I feel all OS’s should do is support standard formats and fonts, and right now Leopard does that.

Programs are another thing. A good designer could use any program to create a design, it doesn’t have to be Adobe. If you can make a design with GIMP or some other non-industry standard software than good for him, since the final piece is whats important. It’s just like saying Comic Sans should be banned. I say, if you can create a design with Comic Sans and make it look awesome and professional, than you are a “real” designer. Don’t get me wrong, every designer, developer, digital artist should use standard programs, but if they use something different that doesn’t matter

Lastly to finish this rant, If you’re a designer and you like Apple computers because they look nice, than good for you. But it doesn’t mean it’s better.

Last night my brother informed me about a code for EA’s Skate 2 which allows you to view the game in 3d using 3d glasses. Just enter the code strangeloops, and everything on the screen becomes 3d. After we entered this code, I called up 7-Eleven an asked if they had some left from Superbowl Sunday. Luckily, they did, so we walked over and the worker handed us a large stack of 3d glasses. Sadly, it didn’t work since the glasses were yellow and blue instead of red and blue.

This didn’t stop us though, we just found a solution to this dilemma–colored dividers. All we did was take the red tab from a notebook divider and replaced the yellow lens of the glasses. In my opinion, it looks awesome.

Later that night, my roommate was informed that Quiznos is giving away free subs. All you have to do is go to that website enter your info and they send you a coupon for a free sub. I’m getting it today.

The last thing – On my way to school today, a man played Pink Floyd’s Hey You on an accordion. Definitely a great way to start the day. Anyway, make sure to check out the speech from Obama. I’m hoping he mentioned something about legalizing marijuana.

It seems that I don’t know how to avoid getting hit with spam and malware, since I cant go two days without Google redirecting my site to a malware one. I worked on fixing this problem, and after the week this shouldn’t happen anymore. I’ll update this as soon as things are back to normal.

Worst birthday ever. I spent all Saturday night into Sunday morning working on this site, and finally slept at around 8 or 9 in the morning. This would have been fine if I didn’t have to get up at 10 to go to the East Bay. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it there at that time and ended up waking at three in the afternoon. I still needed to get to the East Bay to work on a computer, so around six I left and by the time I finished, the Bart already closed. At around this time I got a phone call that I really did not want to get. Anyway, there was a family emergency and now I’m headed over to Santa Cruz. I’ll be updating this website while I’m down there, so until then, enjoy.

Last month I was given an opportunity to create the identity and branding for a new supercross racing team. Today, marks the first proposal for the website. As the client stated, they want a clean corprate website which isn’t too borring or over-the-top. The colors proposed include red, gray, black, white, and gold. These colors are not yet official, but it gives me a base line of what the client wants. The best part of this project is that I can use it as a homework assignments, which is nice…

Anyway, after looking at several supercross websites and experiancing the pit myself, I pretty much get a general understanding of the target audience and since I am twenty-two it should be simple to relate.

—–More updated info will be posted later.—–

It’s my birthday and I finally got the front page up and running. I’m still getting used to WordPress, so there are a few issues that need to be fixed, but for the most part it’s up. When I started this website, I originally wanted it to look like a blog, so that I could post information easily on the site. This changed after I realized that it’s my portfolio and not everyone wants to read blog posts, some just want to see the work. So, after looking at some well known blog sites, such as, n-design, and smashing magazine, I thought it would be best if I put the blog in it’s own section.

The main problem is that I don’t have that many peices to show on a website, so if I create a portfolio site with very little content I need to display my work up front. All the pieces will include case studies, as well as, images or video. Over all, it’s an on going project and hopefully I can get everything posted by the end of this week, until then, the homepage will look rather empty.
